Short answer: most household drain chemicals attack the blockage slowly, generate heat, and can damage plastic pipes, seals and chrome fittings. They often clear a channel through the blockage rather than removing it, so it returns within weeks. Mechanical clearing, a plunger, a drain snake or professional rodding, works better and does not harm the pipework.
What is actually blocking it
- Bathroom sinks and showers: hair bound together with soap scum, almost always within the first metre
- Kitchen sinks: fat and oil that cooled and solidified, trapping food debris
- Toilets: wipes, sanitary items and excess paper. Wet wipes are the single biggest cause, including those labelled flushable
- Floor drains: dust, sand and hair, with a dry trap often adding a smell
- Several fixtures at once: the shared waste pipe or stack, not the individual fixture
Why chemicals disappoint
They are designed for organic matter, so they do little against a wipe or a solid object. They sit on top of standing water, often never reaching the blockage. The heat they generate can soften plastic waste pipes and perish rubber seals. If they fail, the drain is then full of caustic liquid, which makes the plumber’s job more hazardous. And by clearing only a channel, they leave most of the blockage in place to rebuild.
What works instead
A plunger, used properly
Block the overflow with a wet cloth first, otherwise you are just pushing air around. Cover the plug hole fully and use firm, repeated strokes rather than one hard push.
Clean the trap
The U-bend under a sink is where most blockages sit. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew it, clear it, refit it. It is a ten-minute job and solves a large share of slow sinks.
A drain snake
For hair in a shower, a thin plastic hair-removal strip or a small snake pulls the blockage out rather than pushing it along.
Hot water and detergent for grease
For a kitchen sink with a grease build-up, hot water with washing-up liquid is safer and often as effective as a chemical.
When to call a plumber
- More than one fixture is draining slowly, which means the shared pipe
- Water backs up into another fixture when you run a tap or flush
- The blockage returns within weeks of being cleared
- There is a persistent drain smell with no obvious blockage
- Sewage backs up, which needs immediate attention
Keeping drains clear in Dubai
Fit hair catchers in showers, never pour cooking oil down the sink, keep wipes out of toilets regardless of the packaging, and pour a jug of water down rarely used floor drains occasionally so the trap does not dry out and let smells up.
