Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 7 Common Causes in Dubai

Short answer: if your AC is running but blowing warm or weak air, the cause is almost always one of seven things: a clogged filter, dirty coils, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor, a faulty fan motor, a blocked drain causing the unit to cut out, or a thermostat or PCB fault. Filters and thermostat settings you can check yourself in five minutes. The rest needs a technician.

1. A clogged air filter

This is the single most common cause in Dubai, and the easiest to fix. Dust here is relentless, and a filter that has not been cleaned for a few months chokes the airflow. The unit runs, the compressor works, but barely any cold air reaches the room. Slide the filter out, rinse it, let it dry completely, and put it back. If cooling improves within an hour, that was your problem.

2. Dirty evaporator or condenser coils

Even with a clean filter, fine dust builds up on the coils themselves. Coated coils cannot transfer heat, so the system runs constantly and never reaches the set temperature. You will usually also notice a higher DEWA bill, because the unit never cycles off. Coil cleaning is a technician job, as the coils are fragile and sit behind the fan assembly.

3. Low refrigerant, which means a leak

Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant. If the gas is low, it escaped somewhere. Signs include ice forming on the copper pipes or coils, a hissing sound, and cooling that gets progressively weaker over weeks.

This matters: topping up the gas without finding the leak is money wasted. The new gas leaks out the same way, and you are back where you started within weeks or months. Any technician who offers to simply refill without a leak test is not doing the job properly.

4. A failed capacitor

The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt they need to start. When it weakens, you often hear a humming or clicking from the outdoor unit, the fan may not spin, and the unit either will not start or starts and stops. Capacitors are inexpensive parts and a quick replacement, but they fail often in Dubai heat.

5. A faulty fan motor

If the outdoor fan is not turning, heat cannot be dumped outside and the system stops cooling, often shutting down on a safety cut-out after a while. A fan that runs but sounds like grinding or rattling is heading the same way.

6. A blocked condensate drain

The indoor unit produces water, which drains away through a small pipe. When that pipe blocks with dust and algae, water backs up. Many units have a float switch that then cuts the unit off to prevent flooding. Before that point, you may see water dripping from the indoor unit or stains on the wall below it.

7. Thermostat or control board faults

Sometimes the unit is fine and the controls are not. Error codes on the display, a thermostat reading the wrong temperature, or a unit that ignores the remote all point to the sensor, thermostat or PCB.

What to check before calling anyone

• Is the thermostat set to cool, with a temperature below room temperature?
• Is the filter clean?
• Is the breaker on, and has it tripped recently?
• Is the outdoor unit running, and is the fan spinning?
• Is anything blocking the outdoor unit, such as stored items or a build-up of dust?

If all of those check out and the air is still warm, the fault is internal.

How often AC should be serviced in Dubai

Most homes here need a service every three to four months, rather than once a year as in cooler climates. Heat, dust and near-constant running wear the system faster. Regular servicing also lowers running costs, because a clean system reaches the set temperature and switches off instead of running all day.
