Short answer: most Dubai companies quote AC gas refilling per split unit, with a call-out or diagnostic fee on top and leak repair priced separately. The final figure depends on the refrigerant type, the size of the unit, how much gas it has lost, and whether a leak has to be repaired first. Always ask for a fixed quote after the inspection, not a price over the phone.
What changes the price
Refrigerant type
Older units run on R22, which is being phased out and has become more expensive. Newer units use R410A or R32. The gas in your system is not interchangeable, so the type your unit takes partly sets the cost.
Unit size
A 1.5 ton bedroom split takes considerably less gas than a 2.5 ton unit or a ducted system serving several rooms. Villas with central systems are a different job again.
How much gas is missing
A small top-up costs less than a full evacuation and recharge. If the system has run almost empty, the technician should vacuum it down and refill to the manufacturer weight rather than guess.
Whether there is a leak to repair
This is the part that varies most, and the part people are least prepared for.
The important thing: gas does not get used up
An air conditioner is a sealed system. It does not consume refrigerant the way a car consumes fuel. If your unit is low on gas, it has a leak.
That matters for the bill. A refill on its own is the cheaper option today and the more expensive one over a year, because you pay again every time the gas escapes. A proper job means pressure-testing the system, finding the leak, repairing it, then refilling. A company that quotes you a refill without mentioning a leak test is selling you a temporary fix.
What a fair quote should include
- An inspection and pressure test to confirm the gas is actually low
- Leak detection, with the leak location identified
- The repair itself, quoted separately so you can see what you are paying for
- Refill to the correct weight for your unit, not a rough top-up
- A cooling test before the technician leaves
- A warranty covering both the repair and the gas
Signs you need gas, and signs you do not
People often ask for a refill when the real problem is elsewhere. Low gas typically shows as ice on the pipes or coils, a hissing sound, and cooling that has weakened gradually over weeks.
If instead the unit stopped cooling suddenly, trips the breaker, or the outdoor fan is not spinning, the cause is more likely electrical or a failed capacitor, and adding gas will not help. A technician who tests before selling you gas saves you the cost.
Why prices differ between companies
Quotes in Dubai vary widely for the same job. Lower prices sometimes mean a top-up with no leak repair, no warranty, or no VAT invoice. It is worth asking three questions before agreeing: is the leak included, is the price fixed before work starts, and what warranty comes with it.
